I was looking for an image of a coal mine that I thought everybody would be able to easily recognise as being a coal mine. I wanted it to be very clear so that the viewer would not get confused and perhaps wrongly identify it as something else.

I opened up this image in an internet Application called Rasterbator. This allowed the image to be split up into 12 A3 sized prints. When these images are put together, they made up the original image, albeit on a much larger scale.

I then ripped up the individual prints and stuck them onto a large sheet of brown wrapping paper with slight random gaps in between. I think the violence of the tears, rather than using a blade to cut up the image, is quite a good translation of how the industry and communities were affected.
